Eric has done a great job with my students at Buchser Middle school. His new book is a super supplementary text for the beginner and intermediate student. It certainly motivates them to spend more time practicing.

Great work Eric! Finally a book with all the songs that students ask for at lessons. It’s a student fake book.
Fred Rast (Clarinet, saxophone, educator, mouthpiece maker, Brookdale CA)

Eric, I just wanted you to know that I have had both the beginner and the advanced band classes where I handed out the Really Big Student Songbooks and we had a blast playing songs from them. I also can’t begin to tell you how many new concepts we covered in the beginner band class, from staccato to accents to D.S. al Fine plus a couple of new notes and a couple of new rhythms.
These are terrific! Thanks for making them available!

Eric sent me a copy of his THE REALLY BIG STUDENT SONGBOOK and I have to say it’s not only really big, but also really great! He’s got Christmas Songs, Folk Songs, Classical Repertoire , the list goes on and on! Especially great for sight-reading practice!

Clint “Pops” McLaughlin –
There has always been a shortage of material for beginning and intermediate students. How to get them to practice was the #1 issue. Enter Eric and The Really Big Student Songbook. Now these students have enough different material to stay interested for the long haul!

Eric, I just wanted to report that the Really Big Student Songbook has revolutionized how I teach elementary and early middle school students. For decades I taught using very traditional methods…Clarke, Arban, Schlossberg but with very limited results. It occurred to me one day that the wisdom in those necessary methods could wait. Kids don’t choose to play an instrument to practice what they perceive as tedium. With the Songbook they play tunes that are sometimes familiar, but ones that often aren’t. Often a kid will come back weeks later to tell me they were watching tv and recognized a tune they had recently played. After a point I transition them to the more standard rep by which time they’re ready to receive that knowledge. My mindset is “melodic playing is the foundation of technique building.” Again, my thanks and regards. DA

Before my beginnings as a teacher, I wondered why there wasn’t a book that incorporated everything I used to hear while watching Looney Tunes! Then, a blessing was bestowed upon the beginner trumpet world when Eric published this book in 2003. I found a copy in 2006 and have continuously seen students enjoy their experience with this book. This book is like Aesop’s fables, in the way that every piece of music inside has a significant cultural and musical value that allows students to build upon their innate musical skill- their ear! Great conceptual book, Eric!
